emo-electronic-pop

Music genres seem to get more complicated all the time. When someone mentions classical or rock or folk or country, I can clearly hear the music in my head. Recently Ivy posted this song on Facebook.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2-DA73VSqM&feature=related  (this isn't the video she posted but the music is the same and I like the scenes of Seattle). I liked it and that surprised me because it has a sound that I would call techno. The techno or electronic sound is still a little outside my definition of music. It makes me think of an episode of the TV show  Friends where Ross plays his keyboard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLa8Br569gA      I decided to look more into the band, Owl City. One review I read called the music emo-electronic-pop. If I had just read that description, you can bet I would have never given it a chance. I went to the band's MySpace and did some more listening.   http://www.myspace.com/owlcity  Here is my quasi review.
I found the songs surprisingly enjoyable. There are lots of references to nature and to love. There is one called "Fireflies" that I like because it reminds me of growing up in Missouri and warm humid summer nights in my back yard catching fireflies A song can't be all bad if it takes you back to a memory. One song called "Dental Care"  is just fun and silly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMBnBs77G70&feature=related   Most of the songs seem dreamy and shallow but they are the kind that is easy to sing along with in the car. I think I will enjoy it, from time to time. I know this isn't a ringing endorsement. RollingStone was less generous in their assessment. Their review compared the music to,"an amorous e-mail you'll regret in the morning."
All in all it was fun for me to listen to something outside my usual fare. Sometimes I get stuck in a music rut. I have been known to think there is only one music genre and it's called The Beatles.
P.S. I hope putting in so many links isn't annoying. Oh well, it's my blog. I can do what ever I want.
