I inherited some dishtowels from my Mom that have "Good Luck Kittens" embroidered on them. I saw these towels in her cedar chest but she never used them. She had received them from her aunt for her wedding. She didn't want to ruin them by using them. When I got them I decided they had been confined to a cedar chest long enough (50 years!) and I was going to use them. I have used them and I really enjoy it. They are only a little worse for the wear, except for "Friday" which was burned when it was used as a hot pad.* Here's a fire safety note: There is a reason that hot pads are not long enough to dangle onto the heating element.* Still, even though I miss "Friday" I really enjoy using these kitchen towels. They remind me of my Mom.
In what may not seem like a related topic, I was surfing the web and, as will happen, one thing led to another and I found myself looking at vintage embroidery patterns. (By the way, when anyone says one thing led to another and they found themselves looking at porn...I never believe that it wasn't intentional.) To my great fortune I came across the "Good Luck Kittens" pattern! It is from 1930. I am very happy about this accidental find and plan to make a set for each of my daughters (in-laws too).
I know that some of my friends might find this amusing since no one has ever described me as Suzy Homemaker. I can't knit, or crochet or bake bread that isn't brick-like but I have a few skills that I keep on the down low (after all I have my reputation to consider). So here goes, "I can embroider and I don't care who knows it!" The pictures make the cloth look a little gray but it is a nice linen color. The camera just picked up some shadow.
Friday was dusting the ceiling with a feather duster.
Oooh! I am very impressed that you can embroider, that is a skill I know I am not patient enough for! This is such a cute pattern, I would be honored if I was lucky enough to have one made by you!
ReplyDeleteAww - those are a adorable. Once upon a time I made a little embroidery project for my Great Grandma Fischer. It said "Love grows from little things" and had a tree with hearts instead of leaves. After she died, I visitng the relatives she had been living with and found it was framed and hanging on her wall. It didn't feel right to ask for it (especially since I had been given her Bible with all the many things she kept in it) but I do wish I had it now.
